Located at an altitude of 1,496 meter above sea level and with a population of approximately 2,60,000 people, Shillong is the capital of one the smallest states, Meghalaya. Shillong has a well-appointed modern town facility with excellent power-supply & state-of-the-art telecommunication network.
The city derives its name from the manifestation of the creator called Shulong - born to a peasant girl, but bestowing the art of democratic governance and rule of justice in the formation of the princely state of Shyllong which subsequently bifurcated into Mylliem State and Khyrim State in 1830.
Surrounded by verdant hills, Shillong offers a panoramic view of the graceful scenic countryside.The nearest major airport and railway station is at Guwahati, which is about 120 km away from Shillong. Shillong can be reached by taxi/car and the fare is about INR 1200. Guwahati Airport is well connected to many major cities in India including Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata. Direct flights are also available to Bangkok. Delhi and Kolkata are the international airports close to Guwahati; International travellers can connect to Guwahati through Kolkata or Delhi. There are also helicopter services available from Guwahati to Shillong. Indian Airlines also operates a direct flight from Kolkata to Shillong Airport.
Due to latitude and high elevation, Shillong has a sub-tropical climate with warm summer and cold winter.
